Consequently, I have things like a reel full of Pentangle & related sessions spanning most of 1968 (which I'm having 24-bit transferred - I still hope there will be a comprehensive Pentangle BBC CD set at some point, though the politics are complicated) and a reel of Ralph McTell sessions spanning a year (Peel + folk shows). In most of the surviving compo reels, the music follows chronological order (as broadcast) but as time goes on, he becomes more selective and maybe leaves longer gaps before compiling. I believe Geoff - a recording buff, who later spent time as a BBC radio engineer in the early 70s (though not on any Peel shows - though he did leave notes on Peel's windscreen in the BBC car park recommending session guests, like Mike Maran) - used two tape machines: as far as I can make out, he'd record episodes of shows and then maybe a month later compile on to a second reel the bits that he'd like to keep - usually session tracks but also some LP tracks, with only occasional bits of Peel chat. Hi all - I sdould point out one curiosity about the reels I inherited from a late friend, Geoff: they are clearly 'compilation reels'.

The Vogon compilation has a "Brain Opera Part 1" at 5 minutes, so I am leaning towards the Sugarmegs compilation being wrong Before I go changing the wiki, I thought I'd just better check first! So I am wondering if the Sugarmegs file has bundled the 1969 session track with the 1968 session, and Colin's Early 1969 version is actually from Dec 1968 (it's beside another session track from #5), or if they might possibly have been performed by the Bonzos in reverse order. Colin's tape is titled " Bonzos Early 1969" and has a 7 minute opus, and is the Convivial Vivisectionist. Now on the Bonzos Sessions file from Sugarmegs, the version lumped in with session 5 (1968), is 4 minutes long (truncated), but it refers to the previous episode being called "The Convivial Vivisectionist" and this one being "The Student's Proposition". (confusingly they are both from "Act 3"). On session 5, it's just called "Excerpt From Brain Opera" while on session 6 it's "Excerpt From Brain Opera Part 3". The next file from Colin Harper has left me a little confused! As all Bonzos experts will know, their 5th (late 1968) and 6th (early 1969) sessions contained excerpts from Brain Opera.
